about the artist
Katja Paulina ist a German-Colombian ceramicist based in Berlin. She began working with clay in 2017 in a small studio in Hamburg and has been exploring the material ever since.
With a background in film and television, she approaches ceramics as a form of storytelling. In her home studio in Berlin, she creates handmade ceramic objects both on the pottery wheel and with hand-building techniques.
The name vargasvargas comes from her Colombian family name. It reflects her cultural roots, a connection to traditional craftsmanship, and a sense of magical realism.
vargasvargas IS AN ADVOCATE FOR CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION. ALL OBJECTS ARE MADE TO LAST. ULTIMATELY, STONEWARE REMAINS FRAGILE; THOUGH IN THIS AMBIGUITY LIES ITS ESSENCE.
